Iceland, the country that was more or less saw its banks go bust some time ago, has mentioned that they are looking into the possibility of banning Internet pornography, as part of an effort to prevent citizens from gaining access to violent as well as degrading content, but critics of this move remain uneasy about such censorship, and rightly so. Iceland is exploring the possibility of preventing the use of credit cards issued in Iceland to pay for porn, with also plans in the pipeline to ban print pornography so that children will remain protected from a tide of violent sexual imagery.
This proposal has definitely caused its fair share of uproar after being put forward by the interior minister, Ogmundur Jonasson. Those who are against this move claims that this is the start of Internet censorship, which when taken to the extreme, might just pave the way to authoritarian regimes while undermining Iceland’s reputation as one of the leaders of free speech in the Scandinavian region. No doubt to push this through will require a whole lot of political will, but we all are subject to natural laws and its consequences, whether they are regulated or not, and pornography has never really seen more benefits than consequences.
